The Great Blizzard of 1999

Looking out my front window
in Knoxville IL

It started snowing
and blowing on
New Year's Eve.

On Sunday, Jan 3rd
it finally stopped
snowing but the
wind kept blowing
and it got cold.

7:00am Jan 5, 1999

Real cold!

After the streets were cleared, the city's
crews started working on the sidewalks.
The snow was almost two feet deep
in front of the
Market Street Mall

Here is how they cleared the sidewalks.

I had dug a path
from the main
door
along the West side
of the building
to the parking lot.

The tractor operator
set the bucket on
the sidewalk...

and backed up
dragging the snow
into the street.

Then he scooped up
the snow and drove
around the corner...

...and dumped the
show in the square
around City Hall.

The result? A thin
layer of snow that
was packed tight by
the pressure of the
bucket but it is good
enough until the
weather warms up!

Here was the front
of the building after
my shoveling but
before the tractor
pulled the snow
across the street.

School was out
for two days,
in on Wednesday
out again Thursday
and in on Friday.

As you can see,
the kids loved
their new ten foot
high mountains
next to City Hall.
